So instead of thinking you have to starve yourself to lose 10 pounds this year, MyFitnessPal will give you a realistic daily calorie intake goal and will notify you when you are approaching or exceeding that goal. You’ll also be alerted when you add a particularly healthy or unhealthy food, with MyFitnessPal explaining what is high in protein, sugars or other ingredients. It’s like having a nutritionist in your pocket.
One user, Alida Marraccino, said about MyFitnessPal, "Frankly, I thought that MyFitnessPal would not work. I figured it would start out free and once I was hooked, there would be a price involved ... but that has not happened – free really means free. With a few clicks throughout the day, you are able to monitor your calorie intake, set goals and ultimately, see the scale trend down."
MyFitnessPal doesn’t align itself with one fad diet or instruct you to cut out entire food groups. If you eat a donut at that morning meeting, enter it in your MyFitnessPal diary and you’ll know how many calories you need to make up for the rest of the day, or how many minutes you need to add to your workout to burn off the doughy treat. It’s a common-sense, informed approach to healthy eating.

This 2015 fitness trend is important because these types of exercises can be done at home, without the purchase of a gym membership or fancy equipment. Other popular workouts include High Intensity Interval Training, which consists of short bursts of intense activity followed by a short time of recovery. If you're looking for a delicious, healthy way to improve athletic performance, you're reading the right blog. Over the past several years, researchers in the field of sports nutrition have noted that drinking beet juice helps athletes perform faster while simultaneously reducing exhaustion. A naturally occurring chemical known as nitrate is largely responsible for this effect. When you eat vegetables rich in nitrates your body produces more nitric oxide - a molecule that supports healthier blood flow and oxygenation of muscles during exercise.
Lately, there's been plenty of good news about beets. However, there are also some downsides to consider. Firstly, beet juice contains roughly 25 grams of sugar per cup. So, if you're diabetic or on a low carb diet, you may wish to avoid it. Also, beets are a decidedly acquired taste. Personally, I don't care for them. But, fortunately, there are other, richer sources of nitrates which are even more nutritious and lower in sugar than beets.
My favorite way to prepare for a workout is to make a green drink with a lemony-ginger twist. Here's how you make my "Popeye Smoothie".
Firmly pack about 5 to 6 ounces of raw spinach into a large blender cup. Add half an organic lemon including the peel and seeds. Pour in a tablespoon of extra virgin olive oil. Next, toss in several black peppercorns and a 1 inch nub of peeled ginger root. Finally, add 8 to
12 ounces of purified water and blend until smooth. I prefer using a high-powdered blender such as Nutribullet or a Vitamix as they completely liquify all the ingredients.
The reason I add olive oil and peppercorns to the mix is that they both assist the body in absorbing valuable antioxidants and fat-soluble nutrients, which are largely inaccessible when drinking conventional green juices. The use of a powerful blender, rather than a juicer, also effortlessly adds a hefty amount of dietary fiber to the drink. Perhaps best of all, the resulting beverage is unexpectedly delicious. Seriously! It doesn't taste at all like most green drinks.
But, if you don't like spinach and/or you need some added variety, feel free to use other great sources of nitrates such as arugula, chard or kale. Enjoy and have a great workout!

Today, supporting the post-workout recovery process is the focus. The key to doing that the right way is to use nutrition deliciously and strategically. In practical terms, this means constructing a bedtime snack with a healthy mix of essential fatty acids, low-glycemic carbohydrates and protein.
When it comes to sleep enhancement, you can have your carbs and eat them too. Eating carbohydrate-rich foods at nighttime tends to make you sleepy. But, not all carbohydrate sources are created equal. Put the cookies and ice cream down! One of the best pre-sleep food combinations is dried or fresh cherries and walnuts. Both of these superfoods contain an abundance of antioxidants and nutrients. In addition, they're rare sources of melatonin, the so called "sleep hormone" that is produced by the body during sleep. It's also important to note that cherries are documented as reducing muscle pain that accompanies bouts of exercise, otherwise known as DOMS or delayed onset muscle soreness.

How To Stay Motivated During Winter

It’s freezing outside and suddenly your couch is incredibly comfortable, pasta tastes even more delicious, and you have an abiding desire to watch reruns of Modern Family. Oh well, you’ll work out tomorrow…. when it’s sunny and 75.
If you find it difficult to maintain healthy habits during the colder months, you’re not alone. It’s normal for people to become less mobile during the wintertime due to a number of factors. Here are some reasons why you’re lacking motivation and how to get back on track:
The gym seems like a magical and far away place.
After January 1st, you decided to avoid the gym for a few weeks until the crowds die down. It was a somewhat valid excuse, but now your sneakers have cobwebs. Get back in routine by committing to a fitness class. Treat it like an appointment. You wouldn’t skip a meeting with your boss; treat your workout the same way.
It’s dark at 5pm.
You arrive to work in the dark and leave in the dark. Talk about a fun-sucker. Try working out in the morning so when your workday is over, you’re free to go home and relax. Still not feeling a morning workout? Invest in a fitness tracker (like the Polar Loop, $100, or Fitbit Zip, $50) to become extra conscious about racking up steps throughout the day. Remember, stairs are your friend.
Extra layers get too comfortable.
It’s normal to wrap yourself in a burrito of warmth, the more sweaters the merrier! Unlike shorts and tank tops, extra layers don’t encourage a tone up because we’re covered up. Don’t let t-shirts and stretchy pants cause you to lose sight of your physique. Though it hasn’t seen much sun in the past few months, it will soon!
Carbs are comfort.
Winter means comfort food even after the holidays are over. Nothing takes the chill off like a hot dish of cheesy lasagna. T-minus 10 minutes and you’re passed out in a food coma. Carbs are not the enemy but it’s important to keep your eating in perspective. Though it’s hard not to gravitate toward comfort foods, try swapping in healthier alternatives. Soup (not creamed based) is always a hot and filling choice. Or try “healthifying” your favorite comfort foods. When making lasagna, use zucchini instead of pasta noodles. Look at you.
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is common. These individuals suffer from depression-like symptoms that start once the leaves fall and continue through the winter months. It’s hard to stay motivated when you’re feeling bummed out, but remember exercise helps combat the feelings associated with SAD. Still can’t shake those blues? Chocolate is often on the list of a woman’s favorite foods and why not? We’ve all read stories about how chocolate contains healthful compounds with hard to pronounce chemical names (like polyphenols and flavanols) but does that justify our M&Ms habit by saying it is “good” for us. Are we fooling ourselves and letting our taste buds rule?
Research has shown that cocoa and chocolate have an antioxidant effect, specifically by preventing bad cholesterol accumulation in blood vessels that can clog them up and lead to heart disease. Chocolate has also been found to relax blood vessels by reducing inflammation—that could help blood move more freely through the body thereby decreasing risk of heart attack. Some research even suggests that chocolate can improve our brains—helping increase blood flow to improve concentration.
There is tantalizing evidence that chocolate has positive health effects. A closer look at the research, however, leaves us with more questions than answers. For example, in studies with real people, the amount of chocolate consumed is often more than we would normally eat and would contribute to excess calories and fat. Several studies use 100-grams of chocolate and that is equivalent to slightly less than three 1.3 ounce Dove dark chocolate bars or 4 cups of hot chocolate. (I know what you are thinking, no problem eating 3 candy bars a day, but can you afford the 570 calories, 36 grams of fat, and 21 grams of saturated fat that come along with the candy bars)
Another concern is that it is hard for consumers to know how much of the good compounds are found in their favorite chocolate—processing can remove the healthful compounds. As a general rule, dark chocolate is higher in polyphenols than milk chocolate. White chocolate doesn’t have any heart-healthy benefits. (White chocolate isn’t really chocolate because it doesn’t contain any cocoa). Unfortunately, the amount of cocoa solids (the “in” trend in choosing chocolate) doesn’t help consumers know which chocolate is better. So, look for the word “chocolate” and not “chocolate processed with alkali” or “Dutch chocolate.”
If you are a real chocolate lover and can’t let a day go by without a chocolate treat, consider the following:
- Dark chocolate is more likely to have the heart healthy benefits shown in studies, so stick to dark chocolate with 50-70% cacao
- Limit the portion size to control fat and calories; buy mini-chocolate bars or small pieces of chocolate and limit to one serving
- Chocolate of any kind contains a lot of calories in a small package, so look at the label to know how many calories are in a serving
- Increase your activity to burn the excess calories—to burn off 100 extra calories you need to walk a mile
- Consider chocolate a treat that has potential health benefits, not a health food that should be eaten daily in one-pound portions!

Spring is upon us, and that means the beginning of wedding season. Although nothing can compare to the stress that the bride is feeling, finding the perfect wedding attire can be a dilemma for the wedding guests as well. When you have been asked to witness the most important day in the couple’s life – you want to dress to impress (without upstaging the bride, of course). In order to focus your search, you need to know the venue and the formality of the event. Depending on how many degrees of separation are between you and the planning committee or the bride herself, this may take some detective work. Start with any pre-wedding events or communication – engagement party, bridal shower, save the date cards, and invitations. How formal were these events, was the bridal shower a barbecue at a local park, or a more formal affair at a country club? Are the invitations on heavy cardstock with calligraphy and formal wording? You should also hit the internet and take a sneak peak at the location of the reception; you will be able to get a general idea of the formality based on the look of the event space and any photos they have online of prior events. It is any shopaholic’s first instinct to go to the mega dress department of your favorite store, but your best bet for looking brilliant might even be found in your own closet.
For an afternoon or beach wedding, keep it casual without sacrificing class. You don’t want to be more formal than the bride and groom, so err on the side of caution with your own attire. A short dress is most appropriate, but if you want to be on trend this year you could step out with a hi-low hemline. A floor length dress can appear over-elegant, and stay away from black – it will not compliment the airy mood of daytime nuptials. Footwear is key here, especially if the venue is outdoors or on the beach. Flats are the logical choice; if you cannot bear the thought of a major event without your stilettos, you may be aerating the soil when you should be cutting a rug. Sandals or jewelry with a little bit of bling will add just the right touch of glitz for this type of wedding.
It is safe to assume that if the celebration begins in the evening, and is in a ballroom, country club, or upscale catering venue, the dress code will be more elegant and refined. If you go with a short dress, make sure it is dazzling enough for the occasion with some element of glam – satin, chiffon, sequins, or glitter. For a longer dress, don’t overdo it. Long and elegant is one thing, upstaging the bride is a big mistake. Just because you are in a ballroom, does not mean you should look like a princess. If you want everyone to see how much of a fashionista you are, try one of this season’s trends like one shoulder silhouettes, coral or mint for color, and lace overlays. When in doubt – find shoes and accessories to make your little black dress rise to the occasion. If the ceremony is in a religious setting, be respectful and wear a shrug or jacket for that portion of the festivities. And although white after Labor Day is no longer faux pas, wearing white to a wedding may offend the bride.
If the occasion is intended to be formal, the invitation should have told you so by saying “Black Tie” or “Black Tie Optional”. Long gowns are the uniform here, black being the most desired color. Elaborate jewelry like a statement necklace or chandelier earrings are a good way to make this otherwise uniform look stand out. Dramatic makeup and an up-do for your hair will also take your look to the next level. Trends in gowns are as timeless as a Chanel bag, and you really can’t go wrong with a strapless neckline, form fitting bodice, and a side slit for that extra hint of glamour.

Super bowl 2013 is only a week away which gives me a proper excuse to explore Pinterest and start collecting recipe ideas. Fall is already here but winter doesn’t seem to be trailing far behind. I’ve always been a summer girl at heart but my favorite thing about the fall is when the leaves start to change. Nothing is more beautiful then riding down the road with the bouquet of oranges, yellows and rustic reds above you. I adore the pumpkins, corn stalks, and mums that adorn my front porch during the season with the sweet smell of cinnamon sweeping throughout my house. I also love the pumpkin features at every fast food chain or restaurant, nothing says autumn more like a Starbucks Pumpkin Spiced Latte.
